October 2026 is officially here, and it is bringing one of the most packed video game release schedules in recent memory. From highly anticipated first-person shooters and nostalgic RPGs to brand-new titles launching on the Nintendo Switch 2, gamers across all platforms have a massive month ahead.
Historically, October serves as the starting line for the holiday gaming rush, and 2026 is no exception. Major publishers are dropping heavyweight titles back-to-back. Whether you are looking to dive into the gritty, locust-infested trenches of Gears of War: E-Day or hit the track in Star Wars: Galactic Racer, there is something for every type of player.
We are breaking down the biggest blockbusters hitting consoles and PC this month, highlighting the gameplay additions you need to know about, and providing a comprehensive release calendar so you don’t miss a single drop.
The Heavy Hitters: Shooters and Action
This month’s lineup is dominated by the return of two of the biggest shooter franchises in gaming history, alongside brutal new action titles.
- Gears of War: E-Day (October 6): Launching on Xbox Series X and S and PC, this highly anticipated prequel allows you to play the campaign solo or in four-player co-op. Furthermore, multiplayer adds the new 12-player Horde Siege mode.
- Valor Mortis (October 13): Arriving on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, this action game emphasizes parrying, dodging, and blocking. Breaking an enemy’s posture opens them up for a powerful finisher. You can also use powers such as fire and time manipulation to stun enemies and create openings.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 (October 23): The juggernaut returns on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Switch 2, and PC. Multiplayer brings 12 new 6v6 maps, Gunfight, and Big War modes. It also introduces “Kill Block,” a dynamic battleground with more than 500 configurations.
RPGs, Racing, and Retro Revivals
If shooters aren’t your preference, October 2026 is delivering heavy nostalgia, high-speed racing, and sprawling role-playing adventures.
- Star Wars: Galactic Racer (October 6): Launching on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, this title lets you wreck rival racers and manage your vehicle’s boost and heat. Beyond the campaign, there are Arcade and Scenarios modes, along with 12-player cross-platform multiplayer.
- Final Fantasy Resonance (October 22): Square Enix is bringing this stunning HD-2D art style RPG to PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Away from battles, there’s an overworld to explore, along with towns, dungeons, side quests, and optional Esper battles.
- Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse: Releasing across all major platforms (including Switch), this entry equips the iconic whip with a new trick. The whip now doubles as a traversal tool as you open up more of the map.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Library Expands
With the Nintendo Switch 2 now actively in players’ hands, third-party developers are aggressively supporting the new hardware with major October releases.
Alongside massive cross-platform drops like Modern Warfare 4 and Final Fantasy Resonance, Ubisoft is bringing its premier open-world racer to the new console. The Crew Motorfest officially launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026.
The Switch 2 version is available as a Game-Key Card, which requires a download to install the game on the system. While it does not support full cross-play, Nintendo Switch 2 players can compete against players on other platforms in specific modes like Grand Race, Demolition Royale, Summit Contest Leaderboards, and Event Leaderboards.
